Important information To Know About Us

A urologist is a medical doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the urinary tract (kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra) in both men and women. Urologists also treat conditions affecting the male reproductive system, including the prostate, testes, and erectile function.

You should consider seeing a urologist if you experience any of the following:

  • Difficulty urinating or changes in urine flow
  • Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)>
  • Blood in the urine (haematuria)
  • Kidney stones
  • Pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen or genitals
  • Erectile dysfunction or other sexual health concerns
  • Enlarged prostate symptoms, such as frequent nighttime urination
  • Male infertility issues

In most cases, a referral from your general practitioner (GP) or another specialist is required for an appointment. However, Dr Sookram also accept direct appointments.

During your first visit, the urologist will:

  • Take a detailed medical history and ask about your symptoms
  • Perform a physical examination
  • Request diagnostic tests, such as urine analysis, blood tests, or imaging scans, if necessary
  • Discuss possible treatment options based on your condition
If further testing or procedures are required, the doctor will explain the next steps

Our practice operates during the following hours:

  • Monday – Friday: 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Saturday: Closed
  • Sunday & Public Holidays: Closed
For emergencies, please visit your nearest hospital or contact our office for further guidance.

No, urology is not only for men. While urologists treat many male-specific conditions, such as prostate problems and erectile dysfunction, they also diagnose and manage urinary tract issues in women and children. Common urological conditions in women include:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control)
  • Kidney stones
  • Bladder or kidney diseases
  • Interstitial cystitis (chronic bladder pain)
If you have any urinary, bladder or kidney-related concerns, a urologist can help, regardless of gender.

You can schedule an appointment by calling our office or through a referral from your GP.

Dr. Sookram’s practice accepts various payment methods, including medical aid and private payments. However, co-payments may apply if the medical aid does not cover the full amount. Patients are fully responsible for any outstanding balance that the medical aid does not pay. We advise all patients to check with their medical aid provider regarding coverage for urological consultations and procedures coverage before their appointment

Many medical aid plans cover urology treatments, but coverage depends on your plan. Our office can assist with insurance verification.

Please bring your ID, medical aid details, a referral letter (if required), previous medical records, and a list of medications you are taking. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact our office. We are here to help!
